Breed Info

Dachshund

The Dachshund, affectionately known as the "wiener dog," has a charming history that dates back to Germany, where they were originally bred for hunting badgers. Their unique shape and lively personality make them an irresistible companion, perfectly suited for families, especially those with young children. With a temperament that combines affection and playfulness, these small dogs have a remarkable ability to bond closely with their human families, often becoming the center of attention in any household.

Dachshunds possess a moderate energy level, requiring a balanced amount of exercise to stay healthy and happy. Regular walks and playtime in the yard or local park make them very content, and they adapt well to apartment living due to their small size and friendly demeanor. Although they do enjoy the great outdoors, they are equally comfortable snuggling on the couch with you after a day of fun. While they can bark quite a bit, their loving and protective nature makes them wonderful watchdogs, alerting you to any visitors or unusual sounds.

Grooming a Dachshund is manageable, with a weekly brushing being sufficient to keep their coat looking its best, and they typically shed lightly. Their inquisitive minds and willingness to learn allow for a degree of trainability that can yield good results with consistent practice. Socialization is encouraged, as they tend to get along decently with other dogs and can even coexist with feline friends. If you are looking for a delightful, affectionate companion that can thrive in a busy household or a cozy apartment, the Dachshund may just be the perfect addition to your family. Visit us at Petland Lake St. Louis & Fenton, MO to meet our wonderful Dachshund pups and discover their playful charms firsthand.
