Breed Info

Shetland Sheepdog

The Shetland Sheepdog, affectionately known as the Sheltie, is a small to medium-sized breed that hails from the Shetland Islands of Scotland. Originally bred to herd sheep and protect farmsteads, these intelligent dogs possess a charming blend of energy and gentleness that makes them a perfect fit for many families. If you're looking for a companion who is good with young children and often develops a strong bond with their family, a Shetland Sheepdog might just be your ideal match.

With a moderate energy level, Shelties enjoy playtime and daily walks but also appreciate some downtime to snuggle with their loved ones. They adapt well to various living situations, including apartments, as long as they receive regular exercise and mental stimulation. This breed has a strong instinct to bark, so keep that in mind if your living arrangements require a quieter companion. However, their affectionate nature and loyalty will create countless cherished moments and joyful experiences.

Grooming a Shetland Sheepdog is relatively straightforward with weekly brushing to manage their beautiful coat and shedding. Thanks to their intelligence and eagerness to please, Shelties excel in training and can quickly learn commands and tricks. They are often happy to show off their new skills, making them not only delightful pets but also hidden stars at family gatherings. This playful and loving breed brings so much joy into a home, so if you’re looking for a devoted four-legged friend in Petland Lake St. Louis & Fenton, MO, consider welcoming a Shetland Sheepdog into your heart.
