Breed Info

Chow Chow

The Chow Chow is a unique and charming breed with roots that trace back to ancient China, where they were initially bred for guarding, pulling sleds, and providing companionship. Their distinctive lion-like appearance and bold personality make them stand out among other breeds. Known for their reserved demeanor, Chow Chows can be aloof around strangers but are fiercely loyal to their families, making them excellent companions for those seeking a devoted pet. While they may not be the most enthusiastic playmates for young children or other pets, they do appreciate a calm and loving environment.

Despite their medium size and moderate energy levels, Chow Chows do require regular exercise to stay healthy. Daily walks and some playtime can help keep them content, but they are also known for enjoying lazy days around the house. Their thick double coat requires weekly grooming to keep shedding at bay, which can be quite significant during seasonal changes. As a pet owner, you will find grooming to be a perfect bonding time, giving both you and your Chow Chow a chance to relax and enjoy each other's company.

When it comes to training, Chow Chows are intelligent but can be somewhat independent-minded. With patience and consistency, they can learn basic commands, but their willingness to cooperate may vary. They benefit from positive reinforcement techniques that encourage their participation without overwhelming them. While they may not be the top choice for novice dog owners, with the right approach, they can become well-mannered members of the family. If you're in the market for a truly unique companion that will lend character and charm to your life, consider welcoming a Chow Chow into your home, especially in the welcoming community of Petland Lake St. Louis & Fenton, MO.
