Breed Info

Labrador Retriever

The Labrador Retriever is a beloved breed, known for its friendly demeanor and loyal companionship, making them an ideal addition to any family. With origins tracing back to the Canadian island of Newfoundland, these dogs were originally bred for their excellent swimming abilities and skills in fishing and hunting. They are well-suited for families, as they are not only affectionate and gentle with children but also get along remarkably well with other pets, including dogs and cats.

Labs have a moderate energy level, making regular exercise essential to keep them happy and healthy. They thrive in active households where they can engage in playtime, walks, or even swimming in a local lake. While they may not be the best choice for apartment living due to their size and energy needs, they will gladly adapt to various living situations if provided with plenty of outdoor time and stimulation. Grooming is a weekly task, as they do shed quite a bit, but their delightful personalities far outweigh the effort.

When it comes to training, Labrador Retrievers excel due to their intelligence and eagerness to please. They quickly learn commands and tricks, making training a rewarding experience for both the dog and the owner. With their moderate barking tendencies, they are vocal enough to alert you to visitors, yet they are not overly noisy. If you’re looking for a loving and energetic partner, the Labrador Retriever is undoubtedly a breed to consider, especially if you’re visiting us at Petland Lake St. Louis & Fenton, MO.
